Top Tips on Growing Vegetables

A talk by Bob Coutts

Club Member Bob Coutts gave his talk, ‘Top Tips for Growing Vegetables,’ to members at the Waveney Gardeners Club meeting at St. Lukes Homefield Avenue in February.

Bob spent many years as a professional gardener and was, until retirement, Head Gardener at the Somerleyton Estate near Lowestoft.

As an active member of the WGC Bob has grown and shown many varieties of fruit and vegetables at club shows.  In the WGC Annual Summer show last year he won the prestigious John Pretty Masterclass.  This is a specialist class showing a combination of fruit, flowers and vegetables and demonstrating no little skill.

Bob described how to go about the dark art of double digging, talked about the importance of growing what you like to eat and gave snippets of advice on soil, crops, pests and diseases.

As it was the first proper meeting of the year, members received their new club books and membership cards.  Members enjoyed a break for tea and biscuits.  While the evening ended with a raffle.
