Wednesday 15th March saw our annual Member’s Spring Flowers Evening at St Lukes, Homefield Avenue, Lowestoft. Despite lots of muttering about the weather and whether things were early or late this year, members brought a beautiful variety of exhibits along to share with each other.
The fun event, open to members only, had 14 classes, plus a best in show category. Members entered one or more of the classes which included, vases of daffodils, arrangements of garden flowers, hellebores floating in water, displays in patio containers and pot plants to name but a few.
Members each took a voting slip and selected their favourite in each class. Thanks to two of the committee members there was some swift totting up of points, while the rest of us drank tea and ate biscuits. Winners for each class were announced, with Kay Bruce taking the best in show accolade for her floral arrangement of fresh garden flowers and foliage. (Main picture right)
After the break members were treated to a talk from Ken Abel, the current WGC Show Manager, about his various plant collections and successes at local and national shows. Ken particularly specialises in pelargoniums. He provided some tips on growing for shows, while sharing some beautiful images of his plants in flower.
The evening ended as usual, with a raffle to raise funds for the club. The Chairman welcomed some new members and encouraged us all to participate in the next Members Table Show in June.
Next meeting is the 19th April with a talk from Peter Maddison – Encouraging Suffolk’s Butterflies.
